WebThe work we do at the Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve (VVCR) serves as a model for how conservation can help both human and natural communities adapt and become more resilient in the face of a changing climate. Human actions along a coast with lower levels of development depend on less costly public expenditures, such as dune building and raising buildings and bulkheads for backup protection. Bank reefs, also know as forereefs, extend seaward from other reef types. Intense, storm-generated waves and currents, including those resulting from hurricanes, can throw sand into the back-barrier area as washover deposits (Fig. The barrier island is the most consistently present landform on the Atlantic-Gulf coastline. The prop roots and upright exposed roots called pneumatophores also allow the plants to withstand occasional wave action and allow oxygen to reach the roots in anaerobic soils. It is not surprising, then, that subsurface barrier-island reservoirs are complex and present unique challenges to successful, economic oil and gas production. Hurricanes can do immense barrier island damage, as Charley did in 2004, but even that storm brought some beneficial sand to the coast. (1995) provides an alternative approach and this approach is being used in a number of recent papers (Stolper et al., 2005; Moore et al., 2007). The barrier island protects the inland tidal marsh from wave action. The downdrift, or thin part of the drumstick, is formed through spit accretion. 13.7. Several communities in New Jersey are protected today by a combination of soft and hard solutions (beach nourishment, groins, bulkheads, and dunes), and many communities employ several of these methods of protection. Unlike stationary landforms, barrier islands build up, erode, migrate and rebuild over time in response to waves, tides, currents and other physical processes in the open ocean environment. This chapter takes a Critical Zone approach to the response of Barrier Island evolution to sea-level rise and storm activity, explicitly recognizing the feedback among sediment supply, aeolian transport, disturbance regimes, vegetation development, and hydrology. The sand is also very well sorted. Most barrier islands have formed under rising sea levels near the end of the Holocene transgression and few remain in the location where they were originally formed (Harvey, 2006; Hesp et al., 2007; Storms et al., 2008). The Barrier Island Evolution Project addresses a research gap between the short time scale of individual storms (hours to days) and the longer time scales associated with the historic and geologic evolution of the coastal system (decades to millennia). Thus, if given enough sand and a gentle coastal slope, it is possible for barrier islands and other shoreline landforms to migrate inland with rising sea level, and to reform ocean ward as sea level drops. If the rate of sea-level rise is faster than landward transfer of sediment can occur, the barrier will become completely overwashed and the subaerial and inner shoreface sediments will be deposited over the marsh and lagoon sediments, preserving them (Figure 37(b)). The subsequent breaching of spits by storm waves would form barrier islands. Solomon Islands is ranked 142nd out of 187 countries on the United Nations Human Development Indicators, and is the second lowest Pacific nation, ahead Moreton Bay, on the east coast of Australia and directly east of Brisbane, is sheltered from the Pacific Ocean by a chain of very large barrier islands. Most of these projects placed materials dredged from the new waterways onto the marsh surfaces to provide a platform for houses and roads. Running north to south they are Bribie Island, Moreton Island, North Stradbroke Island and South Stradbroke Island (the last two used to be a single island until a storm created a channel between them in 1896). Cross-bedding and lamination are present and coarser sands are present because of the high energy present by the crashing of the waves. There is evidence for drowned barrier sediments, rather than preserved barriers, in a number of areas including Australia (Roy et al., 1994) and the east coast of the USA (Swift, 1975). They are subject to change during storms and other action, but absorb energy and protect the coastlines and create areas of protected waters where wetlands may flourish. One barrier to reform may be the decentralized nature of public benefits programs that offer cash assistance. In 1845 the Frenchman Elie de Beaumont published an account of barrier formation. But this may not have been the case, at least as it concerns the presence of barrier islands. Barrier islands are dynamic systems that migrate under the influence of changing sea levels, storms, waves, tides, and longshore currents. Overwash terraces and fans smothered vegetation, while storm surge waters eroded the margins of larger dune segments, large nebkha, and remnant knobs (Fig. Sallenger (2000) identified four levels of storm impacts to barrier-island morphology. Each barrier island can be divided into Hosier and Cleary, 1977; Cleary and Hosier, 1979; Roman and Nordstrom, 1988; Ehrenfeld, 1990; Hayden et al., 1995). Heavy lines outline the boundary of the Coastal Plain and separate the Great Plains from the Central Lowlands. As the name suggests, barrier islands make up an important protective structure for the mainland coast. Without barrier islands, these wetlands could not exist; they would be destroyed by daily ocean waves and tides as well as ocean storm events. Barrier islands are widespread throughout the globe, and their morphodynamics are well understood; however, there is still much to learn about their origin. Barrier-island morphodynamics along the northwest Florida Gulf of Mexico coast typically are wave-dominated, as illustrated by Santa Rosa Island (Figure 35(c)). A good example is found at Miramichi Bay, New Brunswick, where Portage Island as well as Fox Island and Hay Island protect the inner bay from storms in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Later studies demonstrated that landward-migrating bar complexes from the ebb-tidal delta determine barrier island morphology and overall shoreline erosionaldepositional trends, particularly in mixed-energy settings (FitzGerald et al., 1984). The white barrier beaches of the Florida Panhandle, the marshy cheniers in Louisiana and the wind-swept islands along the Texas coast are the result of these conditions. This process of diminishing size often leads to the following sequence of morphological evolution: (1) ebb-tidal delta collapse onto the downdrift beach (Figure 41(c)), (2) development of a wide downdrift beach for a short time period (Figure 41(d)), and (3) subsequent severe erosion of the downdrift beach (Figure 41(e)). Barrier islands are ephemeral; they are sediment build-ups greatly affected by wave action, tides, and severe storm events. Georgias Lower Coastal Plain, an environmental region of the Coastal Plain Province, contains some of the states most well-known geographic featuresthe coastal barrier islands and the Okefenokee Swamp. Given this circumstance, one might think that the coastline looked very different 18,000 years ago. The long-term survival of barrier islands, as well as barrier beaches, is dependent on maintenance of their dune systems, for these store sand and replace that lost during storms. The barrier island body itself separates the shoreface from the backshore and lagoon/tidal flat area. Along the wider portion of the barrier island, dune erosion and washover deposition in the low-lying barrier interior dominate the morphologic response to hurricane impact, whereas along the narrower portions, the impact of major hurricanes causes landward barrier-island migration (Figure 40). There is little question that barrier islands can originate through various mechanisms. Subsequent research on the topic has supported one of these modes of origin or has called upon some combination of these. There have been three primary scenarios ascribed to the origin of barrier islands: (1) upward shoaling of subtidal sand bars due to wave action, (2) generation of long spits due to littoral drift and then breaching to form inlets, and (3) drowning of coastal ridges. Barrier islands are not stable landforms. Pulley Ridge is a rocky underwater feature located west of the Keys that is colonized by a vibrant reef ecosystem. Work on the US East coast shelf (Swift, 1975; Niederoda et al., 1985; Harvey, 2006) supported this model, though modern East Coast barriers have migrated well past the point of their original formation, thereby destroying much of the evidence for their formation during the transgression.
